bard wood; between these planes there are large wedges, are driven down by the snooesBiTe blows of hesvy beams of wood; and the pressure thns prodnoed is so great, as to compress the natter within the bags, into s mass almost aa dense as the wood itself. The piessara is remoTed. by causing one of the beams to fall a few times on the small end of a wedge, placed in the con-tnuy direction. There is a Tery simple and nsefol i^pplicatioB of the wedge, the operation of idiieh doaely lesembles the ono jnst described, though its purpose is difierent. It is often derir-aUe to fix large timbers together with wooden, rather than with iron, fastenings; especially in situations where the latter would be exposed to oorronon through dampness. With this view, a
wedge-8hapedmortice(ac,^a', and he^ (f h) in eadi of the timbers; these mortices are of the same sise at their smaller extremities e /, which correspond when the timbers are laid together. Two pieces of hard wood are cot out, of mA a form as to fit into the sides of this double wedge-shaped hollow, leaying between them an interral, which is somewhat broader at the top than at the bottom; and if a wedge, with sides xery slightly inclined, be driven in between them, they will be pressed against the sides of the mortice, with a force so great, that no power can draw the timben apart. This method is used in bolting together the timbers of the immense wooden bridges which haye been erected in America (§.7B).
